HP released firmware updates for a number of its Serial-Attached SCSI solid-state drives to prevent their failure at exactly 32,768 hours of operation time.
The devices are used in multiple server and storage products for enterprise, such as HPE ProLiant, Synergy, Apollo, JBOD D3xxx, D6xxx, D8xxx, MSA, StoreVirtual 4335 and StoreVirtual 3200.
The abnormal expiration time translates to 3 years, 270 days and 8 hours, a lot less than the normal lifespan of these products. For some of them, the warranty can be extended to up to five years.
Dire notification
The warning came through a customer bulletin from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) support center and notes that the SSD failure caused by the bug makes both the drive and the data on it unrecoverable.
Restoring the data would be possible “from backup in non-fault tolerance, such as RAID 0 and in fault tolerance RAID mode if more drives fail than what is supported by the fault tolerance RAID mode logical drive.”
In total, HP lists 20 drives affected by the issue. For the time being, a fix is available for only eight of them since November 22. For the rest of them, the company plans to release a firmware update in the second week of December.

According to the advisory, the failure is unavoidable unless the new firmware is installed, and SSDs installed at the same time are likely to fail “nearly simultaneously.”
Some users experienced this scenario, with multiple vulnerable HP drives in a server collapsing at about the same time. One user on Reddit says that six of their SSDs died in 15 minutes. Another one writes:
“Just had eight VO0480JFDGT drives fail 2 weeks ago in one server. Each failed within minutes of each other. It took over 2 weeks of HPE dropping the ball until they figured it out.”
HP did not find on its own about the issue in the firmware but learned about it from a SSD manufacturer, which explains why some products already reached the premature end.
Users can check the uptime of their drives with the Smart Storage Administrator (SSA) software, which provides power-on hours for each installed drive.
The saving firmware is HPD8. It is available for the VO0480JFDGT, VO0960JFDGU, VO1920JFDGV, VO3840JFDHA drive models (download for VMware ESXi, Windows, Linux).
It is also available for MO0400JFFCF, MO0800JFFCH, MO1600JFFCK and MO3200JFFCL (download for VMware, Windows, Linux).

We are gathered here today to bid farewell to the Steam Controller, the little gamepad that could in some cases, but couldn’t in others, because it made people’s hands hurt. Its haptic pads are tickling the fingers of angels now.
Currently, Valve’s maiden foray into the world of long-distance game manipulation is on sale for $5 (plus shipping, which can be pricey depending on your location)—90 percent off its original price. There’s also a notice on the controller’s store page that reads “limited quantity remaining.” The Verge touched bases with Valve and found out that after the current batch of Steam Controllers, there won’t be any more. So this is a fire sale, basically.
It’s a bit of a bummer. On one hand, the Steam Controller is perhaps the most customizable controller ever conceived, with a small but dedicated community creating custom configurations for nearly every game under the sun, modding the controller itself, and even coming up with clever control schemes for people with disabilities and others for whom more traditional controllers aren’t an option. But on the other, awkwardly clenched hand, the rumble-based haptic pads—which took the place of more traditional joysticks—never quite felt comfortable, despite their tremendous versatility. The Steam Controller was a fascinating experiment whose legacy lives on in things like Valve’s Index VR controllers, which give off impressively nuanced haptic feedback.
At this point, it’s not clear if Valve will ever take another crack at the Steam Controller concept. Kotaku emailed Valve to ask if a Steam Controller 2.0 is in the cards, but did not hear back in time for publication. For now, the company’s hardware endeavors seem pointed in the direction of virtual reality, especially with Half-Life: Alyx on the way. As such, I think it’s only appropriate that we all press F—or whatever Steam Controller button you’ve mapped F to—to pay respects to the little controller that did its best and looked like a cool robot owl while doing it. That’s more than most of us can say, and for that, it should be applauded.

What is it? The iPhone XS is a nice way to get one of Apple’s X series iPhones without breaking the bank. The 5.8-inch Super Retina screen and A12 Bionic chip are close to the current gen, even though this is a 2018 model, and there’s dual 12MP cameras which will suit everyone but photography fiends.
What’s the real saving? The iPhone XS is selling as high as £949 elsewhere – John Lewis also went down to £699 on this 64GB iPhone but that’s sold out, while Amazon currently still has limited stock with “more on the way”. Also worth mentioning: the new iPhone 11 is selling for £729.
What is it? The Fitbit Charge 3 is the fully-featured Fitbit if you’re not keen on wearing a sports watch. It tracks heart rate, it’s waterproof to 5 ATM so you can track pool swims and the battery lasts seven days.
What’s the real saving? This offer, which we’ve seen at a few retailers, is £20 off the recent Amazon price but the Charge 3 was selling for £120 as recently as August so it’s a good overall saving on an excellent fitness tracker.
What is it? The AirPods Pro are our new best wireless earbuds, but if you don’t need noise cancelling or you can’t fork out £249, the AirPods 2 have only recently exited our guide. They’re great for phone calls, easy to use, have a stable fit and a long 24-hour battery life with extra juice from the case.
What’s the real saving? As is usual with Apple products the £199 price is holding pretty firm elsewhere, so £40 off ain’t bad at all.
What is it? If only the biggest TV will do, the 65-inch Samsung QE65 Q60R is a great choice. We love the 49-inch version of this TV, which we think is great for gaming thanks to its super-bright display, tasteful design and low input lag of just 14ms – exactly what you need for gaming.
What’s the real saving? This model used to be £1,169, so you’re saving a very healthy £240 with this deal from Currys. You’ll find cheaper 65-inch TVs during Black Friday, but they won’t be very good.
What is it?: Hive is a neat alternative to Nest, offering an ecosystem of smart thermostats, smart light bulbs and sensors. The Hive Active Heating thermostat gives you app controls for hot water and heating as well as a holiday mode and both Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility.
What’s the real saving? This is a decent saving. On Amazon it’s £110 without installation and £149 with the installation, which is a £99 discount.
What is it? The latest entry level iPad runs iPadOS with a new, slightly bigger 10.2in Retina display and more versatility than ever, with support for the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboards. It might hit the sweet spot between Mini and Air.
What’s the real saving? This is down from the official Apple price – which is still live – of £449 for the 128GB model (there’s no 64GB option). The 2019 iPad has only been on sale since September making it amongst the shiniest Apple kit to go on deal.
What is it? The third-gen Nest Learning Thermostat still sets the standard in its category. Google-owned Nest lets you control the thermostat via iOS, Android and Google Assistant voice controls. It neatly avoids overheating by keeping tabs on the house temperature as well as monitoring your phone’s location to see if heating should be started, so you get home to a cozy abode.
What’s the real saving? Google came out with its Pixel and Nest deals this week and on the smart thermostat, at least, Amazon is – somehow – offering cheaper prices. Google’s Black Friday price on this is £159 but Amazon has gone down to £149, which is just shy of £35 off the current £183.50 cost.
What is it? The Dyson V7 Cordless vacuum is one of the cheapest ways to get into the cordless Dyson game AKA the dream. The V7 Motorhead comes with two cleaning tools, tackles both carpets and hard floors and runs for 30 minutes between charges.
What’s the real saving? This deal is a cool £50 down on the price of a V7 vac on other retailers, such as Currys and Amazon, and £100 off the original £299 RRP.
What is it? Don’t let their unassuming design fool you – these Sony WH-XB900N cans pack one hell of a punch, thanks to their dedicated bass ducts and specially designed innards. With balanced mids, detailed highs, touch controls and active noise cancelling all thrown into the mix, they’re excellent value.
What’s the real saving? A generous £101 price cut makes this a cracking deal for bass nuts who care about features and sound quality.
What is it? Why should you consider this Seiko SNE393P2 dive watch? Well, a rugged sports watch not only can be worn casually, it’s also eminently practical. This stainless steel version from Seiko offers a number of the brand’s worthwhile features: 100 metres of water resistance, an analogue movement and a black fabric strap. The main bonus, however, is undoubtedly the addition of solar power.
What’s the real saving? This is a tidy saving of £35 and it’s the lowest this watch has been for some time. Plus the SNE393P2 has been on sale in the last 12 months for as much as £150 and has an RRP of £190, so snapping this piece up for a mere £85 makes sense.
Some of the biggest savings we’ve seen for day one are on laptops and tablets with as much as £200 lopped off on well-specced models. Put in the prep with our best laptops and best tablets guides.
What is it? The Asus ZenBook UX333 is a top-spec thin and light laptop with an Intel Core i7 processor, large 512GB SSD and 8GB of memory. It also comes with a carry case and weighs a mere 1.09kg
What’s the real saving? This laptop normally costs £899 and the spec, particularly the large 512GB SSD, is very good. With £200 off, it’s a great deal on a high-spec and stylish laptop.
What is it? Despite its wallet-friendly price, the Huawei MediaPad T5, feels anything but cheap. Clad entirely in smart matte-black metal, the T5 is dressed to impress, with a decent amount of power to run games and apps on its 10in, Full HD display.
What’s the real saving? An extra £30 off makes this budget tablet a compelling buy if you’re not after pricey flagship features.
£30 off the Huawei MediaPad M5 8, now £204 via Amazon: Our best small Android tablet – kind of the Android equivalent of an iPad Mini – is down to a smidge over £200 for the 32GB model, making this a genuinely good deal. The MediaPad M5 8’s RRP is £299, though it hasn’t been that price for a while.
Phone deals
It’s tricky to find a 2019 smartphone that’s actually selling full price this month so if you’re in the market for one, you’re in quite a good spot. All the major phones have launched and everything from mid-range Motos to flagship Pixels are going cheap(er).
What is it? Google’s new Pixel 4 is the best cameraphone to have graced our hands. It beat the iPhone 11 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S10, Huawei Mate 30 Pro and OnePlus 7T Pro in our professional photographer smartphone camera showdown, with its stunning low-light snaps being a particular highlight.
What’s the real saving? A saving of £70 just over a month after its launch is great news for people eyeing up the Pixel’s world-class camera.
What is it? The Huawei P30 Pro offers one of the funnest, most versatile smartphone camera experiences around, thanks to its multiple lenses and superb low-light snaps. The all-day battery life is the icing on an already delicious cake.
What’s the real saving? This is a substantial saving of £150, which is £100 lower than the previous cheapest Amazon price of £750.
What is it? The OnePlus 7 Pro’s quirky pop-up selfie cam leaves its screen gloriously notch-free, while its powerful specs, triple camera setup and classy design make it a flagship worthy of a home in your pocket.
What’s the real saving? You’ll be saving £100, resulting in the 7 Pro’s cheapest price tag to date.
What is it? The Motorola One Zoom takes photos that belie its lighter price tag, while its beefy battery will easily last till bedtime with power to spare. Its in-screen fingerprint scanner – a feature normally reserved for more expensive flagships – is a welcome bonus.
What’s the real saving? A saving of £49 may seem small compared to some other deals, but you’re getting a lot of phone here for just £330.
£190 off the Huawei P30, now £435 via Amazon: The P30 lacks the curved screen and 5x optical zoom of its Pro brother, but still offers plenty of camera smarts, including 3x optical zoom, and ultra-wide, zoom, and main image sensors.
£80 off the OnePlus 6T, now £449 via Amazon: Crowned as a true flagship alternative last year, the OnePlus 6T impresses with a lightning fast in-screen fingerprint scanner and great value for money.
£20 off the Motorola Moto G7, now £110 via Amazon: If you’re after a budget handset without compromising on the build, screen or performance, the Moto G7 won’t disappoint, especially at this super-low price.
£20 off the Motorola Moto G7 Power, now £140 via Amazon: If you can spare a little extra cash on top of the regular Moto G7’s price tag, this Power variant is well worth a look, thanks to its incredible battery life, courtesy of its beastly 5,000 mAh battery.
Here be monsters. And by monsters we mean terrible ‘deals’ on TV models you really shouldn’t be considering. We’ve picked out TVs from the likes of Samsung and Sony that we think should be on your shortlist.
What is it? The LG B9 OLED TV is LG’s entry-level OLED TV, but don’t let that put you off. This is an outstanding TV with great colours, deep blacks and the best smart TV software on the market.
What’s the real saving? You’re saving £200 with this deal from Amazon. The lowest price for this model was £1,299 until recently and it’s unlikely it will go lower than it is now. If want a good OLED TV without breaking the bank, look no further than this.
£30 off a Samsung 55-inch 4K TV, now £399 via Argos: Down from £429, it’s not the biggest discount and it may well drop further but £399 is an excellent price for a 55-inch Samsung TV with HDR and Samsung’s superb smart TV platform.
(At least) £30 off a Nebula Capsule portable projector, now £247 via Amazon: No, it’s not quite £123 off as advertised but this nifty pocket cinema is at least £30 cheaper on Amazon than anywhere else. When we tested it last year, we liked its 5W speaker, screencasting abilities and four-hour battery life.
£180 off 50-inch Sony 4K HDR TV, now £499 via Currys: You can’t go wrong with a reasonably priced Sony TV, and this is an especially good deal on a 50-inch 4K TV. It has all the catch-up TV services, supports Google Assistant and Alexa, and plays nicely with Android phones thanks to built-in Chromecast functionality.
£300 off 55-inch Panasonic GZ2000, now £2999 via John Lewis: Panasonic’s GZ2000 is our recommendation for the best TV you can buy right now – in our review we said its image accuracy is unparalleled – and it’s down £300 on the 55-inch and 65-inch models at John Lewis.
Smartwatch and fitness deals
GPS running watch under £200? Fitness tracking smartwatch under £100? Our edit of fitness and smartwatch deals has unearthed some brilliant discounts from top notch sports brands.
What is it? The Huawei Watch 2 is smart in more ways than one. Beneath its classic design and ceramic bezel, you’ll find Google’s Wear OS 2.0, with support for notifications, contactless payments, music playback, heart rate monitoring and GPS for phone-free fitness tracking.
What’s the real saving? Nearly£100 off is a decent deal for a handsome smartwatch that does it all.
What is it? Fitbit’s first Versa smartwatch, which is extremely similar to the new second gen, is down to £130. It’s stylish and comfortable with all the usual activity and sleep tracking plus heart rate tracking and a four day battery life.
What’s the real saving? The Versa is technically £70 off at Amazon, though with everyone else discounting as well this is actually only the (joint) lowest online price by £10 – it’s also £130 at Very. Still the lowest, though.
What is it?Huawei’s original Watch GT is really a fitness tracker disguised as a smartwatch and its two-week battery life can’t be beat. You can’t download apps or reply to messages but you do get a smart looking watch that does heart rate, fitness tracking and basics like the weather and smartphone notifications.
What’s the real saving? The price of the Watch GT has really fluctuated over the past few months, tending to hover around the £130-£140. In Amazon’s sale, it’s dropped to £110 and as such is well worth considering as an everyday fitness companion.
£100 off a Michael Kors Access Runway for £179: This designer Wear OS smartwatch was released last year but at this price could make a nice treat or gift – it has heart rate, GPS and Google Pay.
£32 off Nike Pegasus Turbo 35 for £73: If you can stand to have slightly old sneaks, Nike’s sale includes the Pegasus Turbo 35 running shoes, with Zoom Air cushioning and down from £105.
Smart home and appliance deals
When is smart home tech not on sale? Point taken but with these prices, you could kit your whole home out on a serious budget. And don’t scroll past that mesh Wi-Fi system because you’ll need it.
What is it? The Ecovacs Deebot N79S shows just how affordable robot vacuums have become. With the sale price, this is a tenth of the price of a top-of-the-line iRobot and you get a spot cleaning mode, max mode, auto clean plus Alexa and Google Assistant voice controls.
What’s the real saving? The real saving here is £60 as this Deebot was selling for £209 on Amazon not too long ago. That £99 discount that’s listed refers to the original RRP.
What is it? If you’re after more than a simple Americano in the mornings, the Nespresso Lattissima Touch will gladly welcome your drowsy embrace with open arms, pouring proper cappuccinos and lattes at the touch of a button. You can create and save your own custom drinks too, if you’re particularly picky about your coffee:milk ratios.
What’s the real saving? This was actually around £10 less during Black Friday last year, but with £38 off, this is still the lowest price this has been all year.
What is it? The Google Nest Hub is a nifty smart home display that works really well in the kitchen – control music via voice, see commute times, watch YouTube videos, all on a 7-inch screen. Plus, unlike the Nest Hub Max, there’s no camera.
What’s the real saving? Sure, it’s a rebrand on a product that first came out last year but it’s a product we like and £59 is a good price.
£34 off the Philips Hue Lightstrip Bundle, now £45: Already got your Hue smart bulbs in the sales? This flexible, connected lightstrip is down below £50 – it looks great run behind sofas for subtle, smart home-powered ambience.
£210 off an AEG electric oven, now £369 via John Lewis: Various AEG appliances are on sale this week – the biggest deal we’ve seen so far is on this self-cleaning single oven with a SteamBake feature to take care of cakes, bread and pastries.
PC gamers are particularly well served this Black Friday, with offers on gaming monitors, mice, keyboards and headsets. You’re about to make some very good life choices.
What is it? SteelSeries’ wireless Arctis 7 headphones ditch Bluetooth for a more reliable, interference-free 2.4G connection. Comfortable and cool thanks to perforated fabric earcups, the built-in controls and background noise-cancelling microphone make it a solid choice for any gamer.
What’s the real saving? While the Arctis 7 was slightly cheaper at £93 this time last year, £61 off the current RRP is still a great deal for a comfortable, high-performance gaming headset.
What is it? The Dell SE2417HG is a cheap but effective 24-inch, 1080p gaming monitor with a low 2ms response time. It’s nothing fancy, but it doesn’t need to be.
What’s the real saving?Saving £26 doesn’t sound like a huge amount, but it’s a 20% discount on an already very cheap monitor that’s now just £93. That’s a bargain for a good monitor – so good you could buy more than one.
What is it? This gaming mouse from Corsair has eight programmable buttons and is designed for both left and right handers – many premium gaming mice only cater to right handers. It has a sleek, comfortable design and it has programmable lighting as well.
What’s the real saving? This product normally sells for £45, so you’re saving nearly 30% on the regular price.
What is it? This is the perfect way to upgrade a gaming PC. The Acer Predator Z35P is an ultra-wide, 21:9 monitor with a 100Hz high refresh rate and G-Sync support to eliminate tears and annoying stutters while you play. It also uses a VA-type LCD panel, which delivers superior contrast compared to the more common IPS type displays. Bottom line: it’s a really good monitor.
What’s the real saving? By any measure, the £210 off this gaming monitor is a terrific deal. The Acer normally retails for around £750 and some retailers sell it for £800.
What is it? If you want a serious gaming monitor on the cheap, the Acer KG251Qbmiix is a great pick. It’s a 24.5-inch monitor with an increased 75hz refresh rate and Freesync support, which removes stutters and tearing for a smoother experience.
What’s the real saving? This model normally costs £150 and the £45 discount amounts to a 30% saving, which makes it a pretty good deal. More importantly, £100 or so for a monitor with these extra features is very rare indeed.
These are the finest lug-hugging headphones and audiophile-wooing speakers we’ve seen deals for so far. Black Friday tends to be a good time to pick up a discounted Bluetooth speaker or pair of wireless earbuds especially.
What is it? Bang & Olufsen’s Beoplay H9i were classed as top-drawer headphones with active noise cancellation when they launched last year – a great design, superior build, premium sound and even proximity sensors (that work) and a removable battery (take note, Apple). You also get a transparency mode and 18 to 24 hours of battery life. So what was the trouble? Too pricey! But now…
What’s the real saving? This is a none-too-shabby saving of just shy of £100 off the RRP. So, even though the H9is have been on sale previously this year for as little as £220, this is still a decent saving.
What is it? The Bowers & Wilkins PX headphones don’t quite make our guide to the best noise-cancelling headphones, but they’re very good headphones nonetheless and look fantastic. Bowers & Wilkins is a premium audio brand you can depend on to deliver quality.
What’s the real saving? These headphones have never been cheaper at £219, a generous £60 off the usual price. This is a great deal.
What is it? Samsung’s answer to the AirPods, the Galaxy Buds come with a wireless charging case as standard (unlike Apple’s £79 extra offering), as well as gesture controls, a 13-hour battery life, and an ambient mode which lets you hear the world around you without having to remove them.
What’s the real saving? While they don’t have active noise cancelling, their in-ear design should fend off enough environmental noise for a pleasant listening experience. An £30 saving isn’t shabby either as it’s their lowest price to date.
What is it? Beats’ sort-of-wireless, Powerbeats 3 earphones promise to blast 12 hour’s worth of music into your ears – more than enough for multiple workouts (or a single Ironman Triathlon). Their hook design, cable and sweat-resistant build should hug your ears during even the most demanding of runs, and the Fast Fuel five-minute charge feature, which provides an hour of playback, is great for forgetful types.
What’s the real saving? At just under £100 saving these are well worth considering for active types who aren’t fussed about cables and noise cancelling.
What is it? The JBL FLIP 4 is a bluetooth wireless speaker with decent features and even better sound. You also get impressive volume for the size, an intuitive design, 12 hours of playback and – most importantly – proper waterproofing, which means it can be dunked in the pool (or bath/sea) with abandon.
What’s the real saving? This is an OK saving of just over £44 off the RRP, but note that this speaker has been available for a similar price earlier in the year.
£27 off Soundcore Anker Liberty Air, now £45 via Amazon: These are our current top budget wireless earbuds, with a light, comfortable AirPods-style design; decent sound for the price and good five hour battery life that extends to twenty hours with the charging case.
£155 off Naim Mu-so (1st gen), now £695 via John Lewis: The second gen Naim Mu-so is one of our best wireless speakers, it’s also £1,300. So take a look at the five-year-old but still very impressive sounding first gen Mu-so with streaming via AirPlay, Spotify Connect and Tidal.
Of all the major companies in the gaming world, Nintendo is commonly seen as the most out-there and unconventional of the bunch. It often designs consoles which are unexpected, which go against the trends of the industry, and frequently launches quirky controllers or design concepts to fit alongside them.
In recent times, we’ve had projects such as Nintendo Labo – which transforms your Nintendo Switch into a playground of build-it-yourself cardboard – and Ring Fit Adventure, with its Ring-Con fitness accessory. Going back a few years, who can forget classics like the NES’ Power Glove or the Game Boy Camera and Printer?
Of course, with curiosity and creativity bursting out of Nintendo’s hallowed halls, it’s hardly surprising that a number of similar projects never made it to production. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive just got its latest patch ‘Operation Shattered Web’ on November 18, but Mixer star Michael ‘shroud‘ Grzesiek explained why the game needs to be “fixed” before it has any significance.
Former CSGO pro shroud has become one of the most popular streamers in the world due to his god-like skills in FPS that have earned him the nickname ‘human-aimbot.’
However, the streamer didn’t seem too thrilled about the latest patch for CS:GO when a fan asked him what his thoughts were on the latest patch Operation Shattered Web.
The Mixer star argued that while the patch was a step in the right direction, it had “zero significance” until Valve “fixes” the popular FPS, and explained how they could do it.

During his November broadcast, a fan asked him what he thought about the latest CS:GO Operations, and the Mixer star replied “Counter-Strike’s lost, they don’t know what to do.”
The streamer then followed up his criticism by saying, “But at least they are doing something though,” before he explained to his audience what the developer needs to “fix” about the FPS.
“It’s pretty easy to fix, and it starts with kind of what they are doing right now. But their focus should be on cleaning up their matchmaking,” he stated.
The Mixer star then hilariously compared the game’s matchmaking to the hit horror film The Purge. “Their matchmaking, they just let it run free. It’s like Purge. F*cking Purge day. That’s matchmaking!” he said.
“Just have fun guys, f*cking do whatever you want. No rules, no laws. Just cheat away!” shroud exclaimed, as he argued the game’s matchmaking has become less regulated.
The former CSGO pro then claimed that it’s become “miserable” for players as a result of the Wild West-like nature. “Or don’t cheat, be miserable. It’s f*cking weird.”
The criticisms didn’t stop there, as the streamer then exclaimed, “Once they fix this, this update that they’ve done would have worked. But it’s pretty much a free-for-all in the world of Counter-Strike.”
He also argued that the game’s current state doesn’t appeal to anyone, including both the pro scene, and casual players. “The update has zero significance to anyone. To pros to casuals,” he stated.
Shroud finished his rant by saying that he wished the game’s developers would fix the issues. “It’s lame. It really is, because Counter-Strike is a fantastic game. But the devs just don’t know what to do,” he said.
Shroud turned the streaming world on its head, when he announced in October that he was leaving Twitch for Mixer, following in the footsteps of Tyler ‘Ninja‘ Blevins who had done the same in August.
Despite abandoning his previously popular channel, his move has seemed to pay off, as he currently has 840,000 followers on his new channel, proving that his audience will watch him on any platform regardless to watch his gaming skills.
